If you like using a ceramic flat iron to smooth out frizz in hair that appears to be neither curly nor straight, you might enjoy using your hair straightener to curl your tresses as well. If you are on a budget but want to be able to regularly create a variety of hairstyles, you may want to invest in a ceramic hair straightener. As long as the straightener is medium-sized instead of large (which is strictly meant for ironing very long or very thick hair), you can do more than straighten your hair with a flat iron.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Comb
  • Thermal styling protectant
  • Hairspray
  1. Step 1

Turn on your flat iron and allow it to heat up.

  2. Step 2

Comb your hair to get rid of any snarls or tangles that will keep your finished hairstyle from looking flawless. Spray your hair with thermal styling protectant to shield it from the heat of your hair straightener. Make especially sure you coat the ends of your tresses with the styling product, to minimize splitting and breaking.

  3. Step 3

Take a fine section of hair no wider than your hair straightener and clamp the flat iron down close to the root, or wherever you want the curl to begin. Twist your wrist inward towards your head and hold this position as you slide the hair straightener toward the end of the section of hair. Slide the flat iron down slowly for a tighter curl--go slightly faster for looser waves (see Resources for a video).

  4. Step 4

Repeat Step 3 until your entire head of hair is wavy or curly. Style the curls with your fingers. Do not use a comb or brush on your curls, as this may bring static to your hairstyle or destroy the shape of the curls. When you are finished, lightly mist your locks with hairspray to help hold the curls in place.

Tips & Warnings
  • While there are metal or copper-plated hair straighteners that will curl your hair as effectively as a ceramic one, stick with a ceramic or tourmaline flat iron to minimize hair damage.
