Save

In order to learn how to fix a PS3 fan, you have to know the proper steps to opening your Playstation 3. Once inside, there are several steps required to fix a PS3 fan. Skipping one of them could ruin your gaming console or create more issues to fix.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Torx screwdriver
  • 19-inch fan
  • Turn your Playstation 3 around to the side of the gaming console. You will see the HDD area as well as the warning sticker right above it. Remove the plastic piece and the torx screw underneath the sticker. Once they are out, slide the top part of your PS3 toward the HDD area.

  • Remove the secondary cover so you can fix a PS3 fan properly. There are ten to twelve screws that need to be removed. Then, detach the top half of your Playstation 3. There will be a ribbon connected to the main board so make sure you are extremely careful lifting the top of the gaming console off or it will rip.

  • Unscrew the four screws that surround the area so you can access the area where you detach the ribbon. While you are there, carefully remove the WiFi ribbing as well. Detach the Blue-Ray wire and the silver ribbon.

  • Unplug the power supply from the main board to fix a PS3 fan. Now take out the socket cable that is connected to the power supply. Remove the five screws holding the power supply in place. Also, make sure the ground wire has been taken off.

  • Take out all four screws you see on top of the power supply and the other one lingering on the side. Detach the last ribbon from the eject area, as well as the main board. This should have the motherboard sitting right in front of you. There are another four screws here that need to be taken out.

  • Pull out the motherboard. Take out the 15-inch blade setup and replace it with the 19-inch version. Then, clean any dust that has built up in your system.

  • Reassemble the system, completing these steps in reverse, and test it.

Tips & Warnings

  • It's important to use the n19-inch blades because they cool the system better and control the dust issues.
