How to Repair a Torn Convertible Top

A convertible is a great way to enjoy the open road. It's also a hard thing to maintain. Convertible tops will tear because they are opened and closed so frequently. When you have a rip in your convertible rain, wind and dirt gets inside the car. You can repair it by using a kit or fabric similar to the top's.

Instructions

    • 1

To repair a small tear in a convertible, buy a swatch of matching fabric (i.e. vinyl, polyester, cotton). The swatch should be about the same color as the original, but it can be painted.

    • 2

Cut the swatch so a little more than an inch of fabric surrounds the area of the tear.

    • 3

Using a strong fabric adhesive or silicone adhesive, spread an even bead 1/4 inch inside the edge of the fabric and place the swatch over the area of the tear.

    • 4

Using a flat surface on the back of the tear area (have a friend hold a book or small 2-by-4 against the inside of the convertible top, or remove it altogether), apply pressure to the swatch for at least 10 minutes.

    • 5

Let dry. Then repaint the patched area with a matching color.

Tips & Warnings

  • For very small holes a vinyl filler can be used to fill in the damage.

  • Repairing a tear in a convertible is only a temporary solution. Replacing the top is a permanent solution. A swatch cover can begin to tear itself and may stress the top. Eventually the top will need to be completely replaced.
