Many people have unwanted facial hair and would like to get rid of it permanently. Depilatories, bleach and tweezing gets rid of the hair for some time, however, the hair grows back making these options less desirable. The is no guaranteed way to permanently get rid of unwanted facial hair but the Food and Drug Administration, FDA, and the American Medical Association, AMA, (see Resources below) do recognize at least one way that does have limited success. Read on to find out how to get rid of unwanted facial hair permanently with electrolysis.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Check your local area for professionals who perform electrolysis, called electrologists. Electrologists train and obtain state certification. Not all states require certification of electrologists so see below for a list of states that do.

  2. Step 2

Visit the electrologist for a consultation. Many offer a free consultation so take advantage of this. Find out exactly how the procedure works and approximately how many sessions it will take to permanently remove your unwanted facial hair.

  3. Step 3

Decide to have electrolysis treatment. Go to the electrologist's office at your scheduled appointment time and submit to the treatment.

  4. Step 4

Return to the office each week until all of your scheduled sessions are finished.

  5. Step 5

Ask your electrologist if follow up visits will be necessary to remove new hair. Many times new hair will grow and warrant yearly maintenance visits.

Tips & Warnings
  • Ask friends and family for references before choosing an electrologist. Consult your local hair stylist or the person who does your nails, as these people are a good source of credible knowledge about this field. Find out if anyone you know actually had electrolysis done so you can get the benefits and pitfalls from first hand experience. Ask the electrologist for references during the initial consultation. Talk to the references and ask explicit questions about how they liked the procedure and if they recommend it.
  • Electrolysis is expensive so only consider this option if you can afford all of the treatments. Ask during your initial consultation for the cost not only per visit, but the overall cost. If this method is too costly, consider other options for hair removal even though it would not be permanent. Electrolysis may have some harmful side effects such as burns or scars. Understand that even though electrolysis is deemed permanent hair removal this does not mean for sure that hair will never grow on your face again. Electrolysis works by destroying the root of the hair cell one hair at a time. New hair may grow after removal of the old hair. However, this should take a long time and maintenance visits should only be necessary yearly.
