Make a Fob Key Chain

Fob key chains can be worn around the neck, clipped to a bag or strung around your wrist. Using ribbon, you can make a fob key chain in under an hour. This project is great for beginners and kids or for a super-quick gift project.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1-inch D ring
  • 1 yard of ribbon
  • Needle/thread or sewing machine
  • Pins
  • Split key ring or lobster claw
  1. Step 1

Slide the D ring onto the ribbon.

  2. Step 2

Pin ends of ribbon together in preparation for sewing.

  3. Step 3

Sew the ends of the ribbon, making a seam. This makes the ribbon a big loop.

  4. Step 4

Slide the D ring over the seam, then pin in place.

  5. Step 5

Stitch the ribbon together directly above the D ring where you pinned so it can't slide around.

  6. Step 6

Measure five inches above the D ring and mark.

  7. Step 7

Straight-stitch across both pieces of ribbon at the 5-inch mark.

  8. Step 8

Fit the split keyring or lobster claw onto the D ring, then attach your keys.

Tips & Warnings
  • To make your fob into a wrist fob, simply measure the ribbon around your wrist, then add seam allowance and enough room to slide it over your hand.
  • Some inexpensive ribbon can fray when sewing. Look for ribbon that is cloth-like, not like the type you would use as gift bows.
