How to Use a Tow Dolly with a 4x4 Chevrolet

It's practical and convenient to bring a vehicle along behind a moving truck or RV. Yet if that vehicle is a Chevy 4x4 and you plan to lock two wheels into a tow dolly, there's another practical consideration. Chevrolet does not recommend dolly towing for many of their 4x4 vehicles because of the potential for damage to the transfer case and transmission. Full-sized Chevy trucks are too big for many trailers and too heavy for many lead vehicles to carry safely. There are a few options for mechanical adjustments that make it safe to use a tow dolly with a 4x4 Chevrolet.

Things You'll Need

  • Professional mechanic services
  • Drive shaft coupling

  • Put the transfer case in "Neutral." The neutral setting is a recent option on 4x4 vehicles to make towing of this nature possible. Drive the front wheels onto the tow dolly that's attached to your lead vehicle. Secure the tires and chains. Place the transfer case into the neutral setting. If there is no neutral setting for the transfer case, it will have to be disengaged and removed for dolly towing.

  • Take the Chevy truck to an auto repair shop to have the drive shaft disengaged and taken off. Allow the mechanic to set the vehicle on the dolly with the rear wheels free to spin without involving the transmission. Visit a mechanic's shop when you arrive at your destination to have the drive shaft reinstalled.

  • Install a drive shaft coupler that provides a "Neutral" position for the transfer case. Remco makes a product that disengages the drive shaft with a lever placed under the driver seat (see link in Resources).
Installation of a drive shaft coupling will allow the vehicle to be towed safely at any time without the need for further mechanical adjustments.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not ignore towing instructions for your 4-wheel or front wheel drive vehicle. The transmission is active during towing, but it is not being lubricated unless the vehicle is running.
