How to Cite an Interview in APA Style

How to Cite an Interview in APA Style thumbnail
You can use APA style to cite interviews or conversations in research papers.

The American Psychological Association (APA) developed an editorial style, used in all its written publications, that has become standard in social and behavioral science fields as well. Editors and instructors who utilize this style judge a piece of writing based on the APA's criteria. You can use APA style to cite interviews, telephone conversations or email conversations in research papers or articles.

Instructions

    • 1

List the interview reference directly after the quote, in the body of the work. Use the first and middle initials and surname and date of the interview. You do not need to specify the type of personal communication.

    • 2

Follow this example: "Doe recently stated that the sky will fall in 50 years." (J. Doe, personal communication, July 1, 2008)

    • 3

Do not include interview citations within bibliographies or reference lists.

Tips & Warnings

  • Interviews are considered personal communication. The APA does not recognize interviews, phone conversations or email communications as "recoverable data," which can be accessed by the general public, either in printed form or from the Internet.

  • If you don't have an exact date of a phone call or interview, use an approximate date.
