How to Roller Set Thick Hair
Roller set hair is one way to get that fresh out-of-the salon look. It makes thick hair shiny, bouncy and soft to the touch. Due to the weight of thick hair, a style can start to droop and lose bounce in a matter of hours. Roller set hair locks in bounce. While blow drying can leave hair lifeless and frizzy, roller setting requires only air drying. It is a much healthier way to get a style, especially for damaged or over-processed hair. Choose which rollers are right for you. Rollers come in many shapes and sizes. The smaller ones are for tighter curls. The large ones are for a straighter, sleek look. Medium rollers are for softer, loose curls. It makes no difference if the rollers have a snap-on cover or if you are using bobby pins to secure the roller. Use whichever one is most comfortable for you.

Shampoo and condition hair, using a light cleansing shampoo. Do not use a conditioner that is heavy or that weighs down the hair. Towel dry thoroughly and add a small amount of styling gel to the root.

Comb hair out and part down the middle into two sections. Decide how you are going to style hair using your rollers. Lift a section of hair and comb it upward. Place roller at strands and roll down to the head. Then secure the curl. Divide the sections going on the rollers evenly. Make sure that both sides of your head have the same number of rollers and that they are positioned the same way on both sides. There are many ways to get different styles. For a spiral curl, use a small curler positioned sideways. For more volume, use a medium roller with the hair flipped underneath the roller.

Lightly spray your root area with a mild hair spray for better hold. Do not over spray. It can leave hair looking dull and sticky.
-
5
Take the rollers out and brush into your style when hair is completely dry. You can spray with a mild hair spray to help hold in the style. Do not over brush. It can take up to eight hours for hair to air dry completely, depending on the thickness.

Tips & Warnings
If you need to use heat to dry your hair quickly, use a blow dryer with a hooded attachment, on the coolest setting. Always try to wrap the hair section under the roller when setting bangs. The hair blends in better with no separation spaces. Wrap a kerchief around the roller set if you expect to be sleeping in the rollers. This holds them firmly in place. For extra shine, use a reduce-the-frizz smoothing product on the end strands right before rolling up the curl.
Do not use rollers with little prongs to hold hair in place. They are painful to sleep in and can rip out the hair. Never weigh down thick hair by using too much styling gel or hair spray.
