Before you makeover your room, look at a variety of magazines for inspiration and come up with a plan. Tear out the pages of the rooms you like the best and try to determine what they have in common.

Decide what colors you want to use in your room makeover. Don't make this decision randomly. Think about how colors make you feel when you're around them. Decide if you want a monochromatic color scheme, complimentary or contrastive.

Once you've decided which colors you want to go with, use a color wheel to get them exactly right. Then go to the paint store, fabric store and furniture store and make sure the colors match. Use your colors as a guideline every time you pick up soft furnishings, such as pillows and throws, as well.

If you're on a tight budget, a room remodel can be made more dramatic simply by painting the walls and adding a new comforter and pillows to the bed. You needn't replace everything in your bedroom unless you are drastically changing your decor--say from Early American to Danish Modern.
