When submitting or wanting to get published in a magazine for a non-fiction article you need to send a query letter. This is a letter addressed to the publisher. When addressing it use Mr. or Ms. only when the gender is obvious. If it is not then use their name only. When sending a query to an editor you want to capture their interest. You want to submit one that is neat and organized. To do so here are some tips.

    • 2

Limit the query to one page and use single line spacing.

    • 3

Start the beginning of your query with an opening that will grab their attention. For example the highlight of your article should be at the beginning of your query letter to capture the attention and make them want to read more.

    • 4

Provide information to the Editor how you plan on putting the article together and its development. Explain to him/her what they should expect from your finished product.

    • 5

If you have any photos that you plan to include in your article that will be included with your finished product.

    • 6

If their is any experience you have that would give you an authority on the subject include that. For example education, true life experience or if it were a travel article if you went there and what the experience was like. If you don't have any experience other than research don't mention it.

    • 7

Always use normal font, 10-12 pt. type, and Times New Roman and 1 inch margin with no indentations. Keep you query to 1 page.

    • 8

Include a cover letter, that includes your name, address, phone number, e-mail address and web site if you have one. If mailing include self addressed stamp envelope.

    • 9

End your query with a direct question as to if you will be asked to send in a full version of your finished manuscript. Include a date that if you have not heard back from that shortly after you will assume they are not interested. Lastly thank the editor for their time.

    • 10

Follow up, since sometimes things do get lost. Wait until the reported response time has passed. Once it has sent a short very polite e-mail and ask if it was received.
