How to Crochet a Rag Rug

Those old-fashioned rag rugs are beautiful additions to your home. A simple but yet elegant rug in any room will make the room feel cozier and warmer. Making rag rugs using the crochet method is as easy as a single stitch. Use old clothes of the same type of material and you will have a new rug that didn't cost a cent.

Things You'll Need

• Sewing machine
• Crochet Hook size J or K
• 3-foot strips of material 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide
• Quilting thread
• Quilting needle
• Rubber backing
• Fabric glue

1. Cut 3-foot strips. How many you cut depends on how big you want the rug. For a small round rug, for example, you will need at least 15 strips. Cut these strips 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide.

2. With right sides facing, sew the strips together end to end to make one long strip.

3. Make a chain with the long strip of material.

4. Make a single crochet stitch in the second chain from the hook and in each chain across, chain one and turn.

5. Repeat Step 4 until you have achieved the desired size of your rug. To do this, roll the crochet strip up to see how big it will be. If you need to add more strips, simply cut more and sew to the end of the working strip.

6. Once the desired size is reached, begin coiling the crocheted chain around itself, pinning together as necessary.

7. Attach each round to the one next to it with slip stitches. This will hold the rug in place.

8. Cut the rubber backing to the size of your rug. Apply material glue to the back of your rug and attach rubber backing to the glue. Allow to dry before using.
