How to Fly a Plane in Grand Theft Auto 3

Although Grand Theft Auto 3 was the first GTA title to include a plane your character could actually fly, this plane was not exactly the easiest to use. The Dodo in GTA3 is a busted-up secondhand plane that has a poor control scheme and is challenging to fly. However, with some practice, flying the Dodo is very possible, and you'll be flying to your destinations like a pro.

  • Complete the Grand Theft Aero mission. Before you can fly a plane, you'll have to get it. Once you have done several missions for Donald, you will eventually unlock a mission involving stolen packages. During this mission, Donald will instruct you to find the Dodo, which is a plane located in Francis International Airport. Once you complete the mission for Donald, the plane will be unlocked.

  • Take off. Hold R1 to rev up the engine. Release it to take off. Hold the down button to gain speed. Release R1; immediately hold the down button. Your plane will begin to lift off the ground. Do not press the up button.

  • Fly your plane. Maintain your altitude by gently tapping the up and down buttons as needed. Turn by rotating the left thumb stick to both the left and right. Note: Since the Dodo is in poor condition, sharp turns are impossible. Instead, anticipate your turns. Ease into them.

  • Land the plane. This is probably the most difficult part of the flying process, and landing it without crashing will definitely take some practice. Ease off the gas, and make sure the plane is level before trying to land. If you need to circle around to get your plane to level, do so. Hold the up button to star the plane's descent, but make sure that the plane stays level during the process. Try to keep a steady 45-degree angle between your plane and the ground. Once your tires hit the ground, press the square button to come to a full stop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Because the Dodo is not in the best of shape, it is very hard to control. If you want to use it regularly, you are going to have to practice with it. If you want to fly the Dodo again after you complete the "Grand Theft Aero" mission, it will be available for your use any time you like at Francis International Airport.
