Obtain a piece of heavy duty cardboard and a fresh pack of markers. Begin by drawing your idea lightly on the cardboard with a pencil. Draw light because it's easy to erase and does not make a mess. Most poster contests have a theme or objective. Think of that theme and something funny or something you can lampoon. The creative pre-production process is very important, so do not rush to a decision (do not procrastinate either).

Use a heavy-duty marker or sharper to highlight the figure or graphic. Make sure you take your time, as these markers are permanent and any mistake will cost you a piece of poster board. Outline the figure.

When finished, stand it up 10 feet away against a wall. Sit back and make sure you can read the poster and recognize the graphic from a distance. If not, revise and enlarge it.

Add color with markers and colored pencils. Some posters work with black and white, but most need the effects from other colors. Consider what colors are funny for the situation and use the brightest colors in the area you want people to notice first on the poster.
