Draw an Old Fashioned Car

Old fashioned cars represent a new found freedom of the American people. One of the most influential automobiles of this time was the Ford Model T, which was manufactured in high volumes, allowing many people to own an automobile for the first time. Drawing a Model T can be done by breaking the image down into simple geometric shapes. Soon you will be well on your way to having an illustration of this classic car hanging on your wall.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a cube for the cab of the Model T. Do this with two rectangles that are joined. The left rectangle should be joined on the right side and the right rectangle joined on the left. Add a cylinder to the bottom right side of the cube. Erase the bottom half of the cylinder and redraw it so that it is flat on the bottom. This is the engine.

    • 2

Draw a horizontal line 1 inch below the cube. This line should be the same length as the cube. Draw a circle at the right end of this line. Add another circle directly below the bottom middle of the engine. Add the wheel on the other side of the car by placing slightly smaller circles directly to the upper right side of the other circles.

    • 3

Add a small circle in the center of each wheel. Add a larger circle inside the wheel to create the tires. Add spokes with cylinders extending from the inside circle to the tire. Add a rectangle inside the upper right side of the cube for the front window. Add another rectangle to the upper left side of the cube.

    • 4

Add four curved cylinders to the bottom left section of the engine. Add head lights with two circles at the end of the engine. Draw a small square on the front of the engine for the grill. Add the door with a vertical line coming down from the left side of the side window.

    • 5

Erase all of the guidelines and make sure that no lines overlap. Ink the entire drawing. Let the ink dry and carefully erase your pencil lines. Add the hand crank with an upside down "L" shape at the bottom middle of the engine grill.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cars are almost always made of cubes, rectangles and circles. Apply the techniques here to draw all kinds of different cars.

  • Be sure to let the ink dry before erasing the pencil or the image will smudge.
