Cystic acne is a type of acne that is accompanied by swelling of the skin around the cysts, along with redness on the skin's surface. The cysts lie deep under the skin and can become painful to the touch. Cystic acne is generally treated by a dermatologist, as the depth of the nodules can be problematic for home treatment. There are home treatments, however, that can help reduce the swelling that is associated with cystic acne.
Things You'll Need
- Cheesecloth or washcloth
- Ice packs or realable plastic bag filled with ice
- Cotton balls
- Apple cider vinegar
- Ground sea salt
- Strawberry leaves
- Fresh strawberries
- Egg white
- Heavy cream
- Juicer or blender
- Rice flour
Wrap a cheesecloth or thin towel around an ice pack (a resealable plastic bag filled with ice cubes will work fine). Apply the ice pack to the swollen cyst area for 15 minutes to temporarily reduce swelling. You can also make an ice pack by soaking a washcloth in ice water, wringing the water out, and holding the cloth to the affected area. You will probably have to repeat this step within the 15 minutes, as the cold effect will not last as long as an ice pack's will.)
Pour out 1/4 cup of apple cider vinegar into a bowl. Soak a large, sterile cotton ball in the vinegar. After the cotton ball is saturated, remove it from the vinegar and pour some ground sea salt on the cotton ball. Hold the cotton ball on the swollen area for 15 minutes. Lightly rinse.
Take a handful of fresh strawberry leaves, and steep them in hot water for 5 minutes. You may need to purchase your own strawberry plant from a nursery for this, if you don't have strawberries growing wild near you. Wash the leaves thoroughly before steeping, as they could be treated with chemicals. When the leaves have steeped, take them out of the hot water and apply them directly to the cyst area. The alkaline content in strawberry leaves helps bring swelling down, and the leaves should be left on for 45 minutes to one hour.
Thoroughly wash 5 fresh strawberries. Put them in a blender with a fresh raw egg white. Blend for only 8 to 10 seconds. Apply the mixture to the acne area. Both the egg white and strawberry relieve the cystic swelling. Leave on the affected area for 25 to 30 minutes before rinsing off with warm water.
Cut up 1/2 cup of fresh strawberries, and put them in a blender. Add 1 tablespoon heavy cream and 1 tablespoon rice flour. Blend for 15 seconds. Apply the paste to swollen areas. Leave on for 30 minutes, and then clean off with warm water.
Wash a fresh, soft apricot and cut into pieces. Run the pieces through a juicer (or place in a blender, if no juicer is available). Rub the apricot juice over your cysts with a cotton ball. Leave on for several hours. This is a great treatment to use when you are in for the evening or right before bed. After several hours, take warm water and rinse the apricot off. Apricots contain high amounts of anti-inflammatory compounds, which help reduce swelling.
