Ubuntu is a Linux-based operating system. However, some tasks, such as uninstalling programs are universal to all operating systems. Some programs you install in Ubuntu will come complete with an uninstaller, while others require a different method. Once you learn the steps, the process is painless. Whether you no longer need the program, are upgrading to a new version, or simply need to reinstall, you can learn to uninstall programs in Ubuntu.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Go to "Applications."

  2. Step 2

Select a category and the program you wish to uninstall. Select "Uninstall" from the options listed with the program. Do not actually click the program itself. You want to view the other options listed with the program.
If no uninstaller is available, continue to Step 3.

  3. Step 3

Go to "Applications -- Add/Remove" to open the Add/Remove programs window.

  4. Step 4

Type in the type of program you want to uninstall in the "Search" box. For instance, if you want to uninstall a browser, type "Internet" or "Browser". You can also use the categories to the left of the screen.

  5. Step 5

Uncheck the program you wish to uninstall and click "Apply." You may need to restart your computer.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you are uninstalling multiple programs, restart between each uninstall to clear any temporary files the program may have left behind.
  • Be sure you truly want to uninstall. Any files associated with the program may become unusable if you uninstall.
