Using a floor jack to remove a transmission works well but is unsteady and must be stabilized by hand. There are transmission jacks available that are as low as a floor jack but they have a much more stable platform and a chain to hold the transmission secure on the jack. Mechanics have been using floor jacks forever to remove transmissions on the ground. It just takes a little technique.
Things You'll Need
- Set of 3/8-inch drive sockets
- 3/8-inch drive ratchet
- 3/8-inch drive extensions
- Large common screwdriver
- Set of wrenches
- Floor jack
- Jack stands
- Drip pan
Raise the vehicle up 2 1/2 feet and support on jack stands. Turn the ignition on just enough to get the transmission out of park. Remove all the bolts except two in the transmission pan and lay a drip pan underneath. Remove the last two bolts and drain the transmission fluid into the pan. Reinstall the transmission pan.
Remove the drive-shaft. Remove the torque converter bolts. Remove the speedometer cable. Remove the gear shift linkage. Remove the electrical connectors. Put the floor jack dead center of the front of the transmission pan. Place rubber or a couple rags on the jack if it does not have a rubber cushion on the lift arm. Raise the jack to just touch the transmission.
Remove the transmission mount bolts and the bolts from the cross member. Remove the transmission kickdown lever from under the hood. Remove the bolt holding the transmission dip stick. Raise the jack, lifting the transmission off of the trans mount and remove the cross member from under the vehicle.
Lower the transmission until the transmission lines are accessible on the side of the transmission and remove them. Remove the vacuum line from the vacuum modulator. Remove the transmission dip stick tube using a common screwdriver and push it up out of the pan. Remove all the bolts in the transmission bellhousing except one of the lower bolts. Raise the transmission to a slight angle and remove the last bolt in the bellhousing.
Separate the transmission from the engine using a large screwdriver. At the same time, hold one hand on the tail housing of the transmission to stabilize it. Pry the transmission back and wiggle it slightly with the tail housing. As soon as it comes loose, make sure it is situated correctly on the jack and lower it down gently.
