How to Make Dial Up Internet Work Like Wireless

Have you decided to stay with a dial-up connection despite the mass move to DSL and cable, but you wish you could have the same wireless capabilities? You should know that, in a few rare cases, you can transmit your dial-up connection to other computers in your network like a wireless DSL or cable modem connection. However, it can be a little complicated, and you need to have very specific equipment. Before you take any steps toward trying to establish this type of wireless connection, you need to first find a router that will work with a dial-up modem.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a dial-up-compatible router---it needs to have an RS232 port that allows you to connect a modem. (These can be difficult to find.) You also need to buy an access point, which is how your dial-up connection signal will be dispersed to other computers in your home or office.

    • 2

Run a telephone cord from your modem to the RS232 router. Plug the access point into the router as well, then the router to your base computer, and boot everything up.

    • 3

Connect to the Internet using your dial-up service. Make sure you pick a local phone number that will help you establish a strong, steady connection.

    • 4

Install the software for your router and access point as directed and name your new router's network (SSID) through the configuration wizard (the address will be given in your router instructions).

    • 5

Go to the Control Panel on your computer (it can usually be found by clicking on your Start menu). Click on "Network Connections" and find your Internet dial-up service. Highlight the file with your mouse and go to "File>Properties" on your menu. Select the "Advanced" to view your Internet connection-sharing options. Choose the option to allow other networks to use your Internet. If you want other computers to be able to disable or change the Internet connection remotely, select that option as well, but it is not recommended unless you are the only one who will be be using the dial-up connection wirelessly.

    • 6

Start the computer that will be connecting wireless to the base dial-up connection. Make sure that it is properly equipped with a wireless adapter, a wireless card or another tool that will enable you to find wireless signals. Look for the connection that you named and established on your base computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also try using the WiFlyer to establish a wireless connection with dial-up; it is also difficult to find, but may be located on eBay. See the link in Resources to learn more about this wireless tool.
