Wearing a baby in a sling or a wrap is one of the best ways a parent can bond with a baby. Wearing a baby accomplishes several things. It helps the parent and the baby bond with each other. It also helps the baby feel comforted and secure. Wearing a baby also enables a parent to use both hands for various chores and activities while still keeping a baby close and snuggled.

There are many options for a baby carrier. Some baby carriers and wraps are very expensive. If you want to wear your baby yet do not want to purchase an expensive wrap, you could make your own wrap for as little as $5 if you are fortunate enough to find your fabric in a clearance bin.

A few minutes of time and a few yards of fabric are all that are necessary to make a baby wrap to wear your baby.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 5 yards of stretchy fabric (60 inches wide) Scissors
  1. Step 1

Choose either a fleece of medium weight or a cotton knit fabric. Neither of these fabrics require any finishing to their raw edges, so this is a no-sew project!

  2. Step 2

Wash and dry your fabric before proceeding with the project.

  3. Step 3

Lay out the fabric on a flat surface. Five yards is quite long, so a floor works fine for this.

  4. Step 4

Cut the fabric in half along the length to create two 30-inch-by-5-yard baby wraps.

  5. Step 5

Use one wrap and keep the other as a spare or give it to a friend.

Tips & Warnings
  • Cotton jersey knits are an excellent choice for making a baby wrap. A very warm wrap could be made from polar fleece and used during the winter.

on 5/19/2009 I used a light cotton jersey knit like suggested and as long as you tie it tight enough it works like a charm, my giant 18lb 6 month old feels light! I love this thing, and my son seems to enjoy it better than his previous one with the snaps and buckles. All the fabric cost me $25 and I used 6 yards, I have a pretty long torso and a big bust and it fits perfect.
