Remove Odors From Plastic Food Containers

I hate smelly food containers. Not only do they stink, but they may contain germs that can make you sick. Granted, every container does reach a point when it should find its way to the trash can. But, with this method of cleaning, you can help keep your containers longer before they truly need to be thrown away. This saves lots of money that otherwise ends up in the trash!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Dish soap
  • Bleach
  • baking soda
  • vanilla extract
  • dish rag
  • dry towel
  • paper towels
  1. Step 1

Fill your dish pan about 3/4 full with warm water, 1/2 cup bleach, 1/4 cup of baking soda, and the normal amount of a grease cutting dish soap. Let your containers and lids soak for about 30 minutes. Wash thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Rinse completely and air dry them in the dish rack or just wipe thoroughly with a dish cloth or paper towels.

  3. Step 3

Once they are dry pour a small amount of vanilla extract into the container and swish it around to coat it. Pour excess into the next container. (repeat until all containers are processed)Be sure to wipe the lid too, using the towel you wipe the container with, there should be enough vanilla to coat the lid at this point.. Completely dry with paper towels and they should be smelling great and are now ready to be stored.

  4. Step 4

Before using again rinse thoroughly with warm water and a mild dish soap.

Tips & Warnings
  • Spray your food containers with a light cooking oil and evenly wipe to coat the inside and lid. This keeps tomato sauces from staining your new containers.
  • Sometimes containers may be just too far gone to save. At this point it is just better to replace them.
