How to Clean Rust Off Carpet

Rust stains aren't pretty no matter where they appear. And when they end up on your carpet, they're particularly annoying and difficult to remove--more so than many other carpet stains because rust is an organic substance, formed when water on metal causes oxidation. Cleaning rust off carpet is something that must be done with a great deal of care so as not to damage the carpet. Test any methods you use in an inconspicuous are of your carpet beforehand, and be prepared to use more than one method to fully remove the stain.

Instructions

1. Allow the rust stain to dry thoroughly if it is a new stain. While the stain should not be allowed to sit for too long, the rust should be dry in order to begin the removal process.

2. Gently scrape at the rust stain with a butter knife, being careful not to damage the carpet. Pry off as much of the rust as possible without pulling the carpet.

3. Mix about a teaspoon of non-alkaline detergent into a quart of cold water (hot water sets stains). Gently blot the area with a clean cloth or sponge repeatedly. If the stain does not seem to be lifting off after blotting for about five minutes, you may need to try another method.

4. Mix a dash of salt into a small spray bottle full of lemon juice. Spray the mixture on the stain. Blot the stain with a clean cloth or sponge just as you did with the water and detergent.

5. Pour white vinegar on the stain if all other methods fail. Vinegar can leave a strong smell, but it is excellent for removing rust stains. Allow the vinegar to set in, and then blot the area with cool water. If all of the above methods fail, it may be necessary to call a professional carpet cleaning company.

Tips & Warnings

• If you call a professional cleaner, make sure they specialize in rust stains. Traditional carpet cleaning products won't necessarily work on rust stains.

• Test every method you plan to use on an area of carpet that will not be exposed if the carpet is damaged.
