How to Sew a Bassinet Skirt

Adding a simple gathered skirt to a bassinet is an effective way of dressing up a bassinet. If you choose a fabric that matches the rest of your nursery decor, your bassinet suddenly can be an integral part of the nursery theme.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Bassinet Tape measure Fabric Sewing machine Sewing notions (thread, scissors, pins) Self-adhesive Velcro
  1. Step 1

    Measure around the entire circumference of the bassinet. Measure the height of the bassinet. Add 1-inch to each of these measurements. Your fabric needs will be twice the circumference measurement plus the height measurement.

  2. Step 2

    Choose your fabric and purchase enough according to the measurements taken in step 1.

  3. Step 3

    Cut out the fabric according to the measurements taken in step 1.

  4. Step 4

    Fold under 1/4-inch along both long sides of the fabric. Press this fold. Fold under another 1/4-inch along both long sides. Press this fold again.

  5. Step 5

    Stitch both long edges 1/4-inch away from the folds.

  6. Step 6

    Place the short sides together with right sides facing each other. Sew it together with a 1/2-inch seam allowance.

  7. Step 7

    Gather one long edge with long basting stitches.

  8. Step 8

    Apply the male side of the self-adhesive Velcro to the top of the bassinet at the place where you want the skirt to be.

  9. Step 9

    Position the skirt around the bassinet and adjust the gathers so that the skirt fits the bassinet. Secure the gathering threads with a pin so they do not move. Remove the gathered skirt from the bassinet carefully.

  10. Step 10

    Sew the gathers in place by sewing along the entire top edge to secure the gathers.

  11. Step 11

    Affix the female side of the Velcro to the inside top edge of the gathered skirt.

  12. Step 12

    Attach the skirt to the bassinet by matching up the Velcro to finish the bassinet skirt.
