How to Make a Cube Out of Construction Paper
Cubes made out of construction can be a lot of fun to make, and provide interesting decorations or colorful containers for small gifts. The cubes can be strung on strings from the ceiling to make cheerful, simple decorative mobiles, or with their tops left open, they can be filled with nuts and set on the table as favors. For a real treat at a formal dinner, place a fancy chocolate truffle in each container and tie with a pretty ribbon and bow. Once you've made a template, the cubes are not difficult to put together.
Things You'll Need
- 8 ½ x 11" piece of heavy weight cardstock 8 ½ x 11" piece of colored construction paper Pencil Scissors Glue stick
Instructions
-
Making the Template
-
1
Make a template by drawing a 2" by 8" rectangle length-wise on the cardstock (see illustration).
-
2
Draw a 2" square to the right of the top square of the rectangle.
-
-
3
Make flaps A, C, D, E, and G by drawing ½" diagonal lines at about 45 degree angles. Connect the diagonal lines with solid 1 ½ " lines.
-
4
Draw flap "F" by making two ½ " straight lines coming out of the left side top and bottom of the top rectangle. Make two diagonal lines attached to the ½" straight lines and connect with a vertical straight line.
-
5
Cut out the template along the outside lines.
Constructing the Cubes
-
6
Place the template on a piece of construction paper and draw around it. Don't draw any interior marks so your finished product will not have pencil marks on the outside.
-
7
Cut out the cube. Make a cut along the dotted line on the template.
-
8
Fold in (away from you) along all dashed lines. Making strong creases gives your cube a nice square shape.
-
9
Use your glue stick and glue flap "A."
-
10
Fold in flap "E" and "C," the fold over flap "D" and glue flap "F" to flap "D."
-
11
Turn flaps "I" and F" in and fold over the flap attached to "G." If you want to leave your cube open, do not glue flap "G," but if you intend to close your cube, glue flap "G."
