Things You'll Need:
- Baby Clothes
- Baby And Infant Gift Certificates
- Birthday Cards
- Radio Flyer Walker Wagons
- Baby Toys
- Push Toy - Shopping Cart
- Toy Phones
-
Step 1
Ask the baby's parents what they need - this can save you shopping time and save them from having to return a gift.
-
Step 2
Get into the project: Browse a baby store or shop online.
-
Step 3
Consider a gift certificate if you live out of state or if you're short on time.
-
Step 4
Look toward college: Buy a bond or earmark a check for the baby girl's educational fund.
-
Step 5
Build the library; get a baby book or two. Board books with few words, bright colors and things to touch and feel are a good bet at this age.
-
Step 6
Go for clothes, but buy big - at least 18-month-old sizes for this birthday.
-
Step 7
Consider blocks, push toys (such as a shopping cart or duck with flapping feet), noisemakers, or a toy phone if you're at a loss for ideas.
-
Step 8
Go for a nontraditional gift: Pamper the parents. Give them a night of babysitting or a massage.

on 8/23/2008 I agree with the author on sizing. Nearly every baby I have bought for is in to the sizes of 18 months to even 24 months at the age of 1 year...I just bought an outfit TODAY for a 1 year old bday on Sunday and specifically had the sales clerk look for something in 18months. I even asked the sales clerk what size she suggested for a 1 year old, and she said "at least 18 months." I'd say, if they are still wearing 12 months, it won't be long til they are out of them. Of course, the ideal thing to do if you haven't seen the birthday girl/boy in a while, is to ask the parents what size is ideal. Overall, good write. :)

on 9/1/2007 I to think the suggestion for 18months clothing is inappropriate unless they take into account the changing season. The other suggestions are pretty much right on though. I also don't like the suggestion of giving a gift to the parents instead. If you were to do that and also give a gift to the child it wouldn't be bad.

on 7/7/2007 Why would anyone want 18 month size clothes for a 12 month old? By the time the child fits into it, the season will be completely wrong! I have a 6 year old, 3 year old, and my daughter is turning 1 in a week. There is NO way she would be able to fit into 18 month sized clothing. This is HORRIBLE advice!
