Instructions

    • 1

Cut the ruby red grapefruit in half with a larger chef's knife, if you have one. If not, slice through with a smaller paring knife. Cut the grapefruit along the equator, not through the poles where the stem connects, to make it easier to cut in the next step.

    • 2

Separate the halves. Using a sharp paring knife, make a series of cuts from the center of the grapefruit out, tracing along the membranes. This will loosen the fruit from the membranes. Turn the grapefruit as you cut, making sure not to miss any membranes.

    • 3

Make a final cut around the edge of the grapefruit, between the segments and the skin. You might have to angle the knife to get all the way to the bottom. Rotate the grapefruit as you cut to get all the way around.

    • 4

Repeat for the other half, and you're all set to eat the grapefruit. Try one segment or a bit of juice first, and then add sugar or honey if you think it is necessary.

Tips & Warnings

  • Roll the grapefruit with some pressure on the countertop first to make it juicier.

  • If you prefer, you can also peel a grapefruit like an orange. The segments will contain the membranes, which will make it tougher, but also potentially more vitamin-rich.

  • Make sure your paring knife is sharp. A dull knife can cause you to use too much pressure, which can be dangerous.

  • Check with your doctor before consuming grapefruit products to rule out potential interactions with medications.
