Removing a locked deadbolt is only a problem if you're on the outside looking in, or if you're inside, and the deadbolt requires a key from both the inside and the outside. It is possible to remove it, but only by destroying the cylinder, which requires replacing it.       Drill right where the key is inserted

      Insert a metal-drilling bit into your drill, and drill directly into the keyhole of the lock. You'll have to drill straight in, which will destroy the lock and allow the pins and springs to become disengaged.

      The pins and springs inside a lock

      Insert a small screwdriver into the drilled hole, and rotate back and forth. This will allow the pins and springs to fall out, and allow the cylinder to turn. Repeat drilling until the cylinder is able to turn and you are able to use the screwdriver as a key.

      A metal drilling bit is required

      Pull the cylinder out, and use a screwdriver to disengage the deadbolt from the locked position.

      You'll need a powerful drill

      Open the door and remove the screws that hold the deadbolt into place on the inside of the door.

      Only perform this if you can't find your key

      Slide the lock out of the door, once you've removed the screws that hold the strike plate into place. If security is an issue, install the new deadbolt right away.

  • Don't be afraid of over-drilling when drilling into the cylinder. Plan on buying a new deadbolt if you have go this route.

  • Always wear eye protection, because drilling in metal is extremely dangerous.
