Dogs need collars to go for a walk or identify whom their owners are in case they get lost. There is no law that states a person can't jazz up a dog collar by making an original one from scratch. By making your own dog collar you can give your dog a look that compliments his personality. Others will notice your original dog collar and may even hire you to make one for them.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1 inch nylon webbing 1 inch plastic buckle Measuring tape Needle Thread Hot glue gun Plastic jewels Ribbons Scissors Candle Match
  1. Step 1

Take a measuring tape and measure around your dog's neck. Don't measure it tight. Add two inches for each side to the total. So if your dog's neck is 8 inches around, your total would be 12 inches.

  2. Step 2

Use the figure from step 1 to cut out the appropriate length of nylon webbing.

  3. Step 3

Melt both the of the ends of your nylon webbing strip with the flame from a candle. This will prevent your dog collar from fraying.

  4. Step 4

Take your buckle and undo it so that you have two pieces. Place one by each side of the nylon webbing so you can visually see how the collar will come together.

  5. Step 5

Start with the left side of the nylon webbing strip and thread one end through the designated hole in the buckle. Fold it back over so that the nylon webbing now overlaps itself.

  6. Step 6

Sew the overlapping pieces of nylon together. You can do this two ways: with a sewing machine, or a good old-fashioned needle and thread. Your buckle is now secure.

  7. Step 7

Work on the other end of the nylon webbing. You are going to do the same things you did in steps 5 and 6. Slide the webbing through the designated hole in the buckle and sew the overlapping webbing so that the buckle can't get out.

  8. Step 8

Find some plastic jewels at your local craft store that have a flat backing. Get out a hot glue gun and give it time to warm up. Glue the jewels' backing and press them onto the nylon dog collar. Arrange them to form any pattern you want. Wait for the glue to dry before using.

  9. Step 9

Pick some patterned ribbon to add to the collar. Cut it to fit the collar and glue it on with the hot glue gun.

Tips & Warnings
  • Add your dog's name to the collar by cutting out foam letters. You can glue them on with a hot glue gun.
  • Don't burn yourself on the candle or the nylon webbing after you melt the edges. Wait for them to cool before continuing to the next step.
