AOL Instant Messenger's (AIM) popularity is still intact even with the advent of Web 2.0 social media applications. Parent company AOL keeps updating its IM freeware with new features, plugins and menus. It recommends latest version upgrades to its loyal user base. Things You'll Need:

Laptop/desktop with Vista Internet connectivity

Step 1

Connect to the Internet via your Internet service provider or other Internet connectivity option/service. Call up the AOL home page by following the link in resources.
Step 2

Scroll down to Services and click the "Instant Messenger" link on the AOL home page. You are taken to the "AIM 6.8" micro home page. Click the "Download" button. You will be prompted to either run or save the application.
Step 3

Click "Run" and allow the "AIM" program to download. The download time will depend on your Internet connectivity speeds.
Step 4

Click on the "I Agree" button on the Installation Wizard. Choose from the additional features such as AOL Search, AOL Toolbar and other features, checking the boxes according to your preferences. Wait as the wizard installs AIM. This will take a few minutes. Please wait till the "Installation Complete" message is flashed.
Step 5

Open the installed AOL Messenger program to make sure it works properly. Check all the features. Sign in with your existing AOL email address as a screen name and start chatting with your friends.

Tips & Warnings

Restart the computer if needed to ensure that the installation process was successful. If you don't have a screen name, click "Get a Screen Name" link in the open AIM program and create a new AOL email address. Alternate download instructions. Scroll down to Services on the AOL home page and click "Downloads." Scroll down to "AIM" in the newly opened AOL Free Downloads page and click the "Download now" button.
