Log Into Your Wireless Router

A wireless router is a networking device that performs as a gateway joining your computer and your high-speed modem. It also acts as a wireless access point, allowing your wireless-enabled devices to communicate with it and connect to the Internet wirelessly. In order to set up or change your wireless router's settings and allow it to communicate to wireless devices, you must first know how to log on to the router's address.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Router URL Web browser Username and password
  1. Step 1

Open a web browser to access the router's URL. Using the computer on which you first installed your wireless router, open up a web browser. In the browser's address bar, type in the router's address. If you do not know the address, consult the documentation that came with your router or go to the manufacturer's webpage to find the address. There may be multiple addresses you can use. Click "Go" or press "Enter" to go to the router's main page.

  2. Step 2

Input the router's username and password. When you type in the wireless router's URL, your computer will recognize the address and your browser will load an authorization dialog box. Type the username and password into the case-sensitive textboxes. The default username for most routers is "admin" and the default password is "password" or there is no password. If you changed the password or username from the default ones, you must enter them instead of the default ones.

  3. Step 3

Click the settings menu links you wish to access. There are several links on the wireless router's main page that allow you to change your router's settings. These include a link to change your wireless router's password and to change the SSID (network name). Any changes you make to your wireless router may affect your wireless devices' ability to connect to the network and may require that you change their settings to reflect the changes you made to the router.

  4. Step 4

Save your changes and log out. If you have made any changes to your wireless settings, you must click "Save" or "Apply" before exiting the settings menu. When you have finished making changes, click the "Logout" link. If you leave the page open for more than five minutes, you may automatically be logged out of the wireless router.

Tips & Warnings
  • Securing your wireless router by changing its encryption settings will prevent others from logging on to your wireless network and using your Internet service.
