Changing the fuel pump on your Chevrolet Blazer requires lowering the fuel tank. Preparing for this task will speed up the process and make your job much easier. Before starting, verify you have all the tools and right components needed to complete the job. The steps apply to the 1995 through 1997 Chevy Blazer, which is similar to other models.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hand siphon pump Floor jack and 2 jack stands Wrench set Ratchet and socket set New pump/sending unit assembly O-ring seal New fuel pump

    Remove

  1. Step 1

Park your car in a safe place with a level surface and plenty of room for you to work around the Blazer.

  2. Step 2

Relieve the fuel system pressure. Loosen the fuel filler cap and open the hood; locate and remove the fuel pump relay from the fuse block in the engine compartment (the fuse should be marked as "F/Pump").

  3. Step 3

Drain the fuel tank through the filler neck, if necessary. You can use a hand-operated siphon pump.

  4. Step 4

Raise the rear of the vehicle using a floor jack, and safely support it on two jack stands.

  5. Step 5

Disconnect the black, negative battery cable. Support the fuel tank with a jack and remove the tank straps using a wrench or ratchet and sockets.

  6. Step 6

Disconnect the fuel lines, vapor hose and fuel pump electrical connector from the pump/sending unit assembly on the tank. If necessary, lower the tank enough using the floor jack to reach the hose fittings; then lower the fuel tank to the floor.

  7. Step 7

Remove the cam lock securing the pump/sending unit assembly to the tank. Use a long punch and a light hammer to turn the cam lock counterclockwise. Once you release the cam lock, lift the pump/sending unit off the fuel tank. Replace the old pump with the new unit. Install a new O-ring seal around the mounting base of the pump/sending unit assembly; set the assembly in the tank and close the cam lock.

  8. Install

  9. Step 1

Connect the fuel lines, vapor hose and electrical connector to the pump/sending unit assembly and lift the tank to its mounting position.

  10. Step 2

Secure the tank to the vehicle frame with the straps. Lower the Blazer, install the fuel pump relay and connect the black, negative battery cable.

  11. Step 3

Refill the tank with fuel, start the engine and check for leaks.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consult your owner's manual or vehicle service manual to identify and locate components. You can buy one at most auto parts stores or consult one for free at most public libraries.
  • When working on the fuel system of your vehicle, do not allow smoking near or around the car, and park away from appliances with open flames like water heaters and dryers to avoid a possible accident.
