Things You'll Need:
- Tanning lotion of your choice
- Regular moisturizer
- About 10 minutes of free time
-
Step 1
Pick a gradual tanning lotion. These are primarily moisturizers but have a subtle tanning formula in them. Gradual tanning lotions allow for error without it being a major issue. I've had a lot of success with Victoria's Secret Bare Bronze gradual tanning lotion and Jergens Natural Glow.
-
Step 2
Since self-tanners often have a distinct smell to them, I like to apply it at night so I don't have to deal with the odor. When I wake up, I have a tan.
-
Step 3
Start with clean, dry skin. If you shower in the morning and are applying the tanner at night, don't put lotion on in the morning.
-
Step 4
Using only a small amount of tanner, begin applying it thinly in slow, circular movements. Never use an up-and-down motion, as this can cause streaking.
-
Step 5
Be very careful around your knees, elbows and ankles. Only apply the tiniest bit of tanner there. If you have problems with the tanner being darker on those areas, try diluting the tanner with regular lotion and then apply it to your knees, elbows and ankles.
-
Step 6
Let the lotion dry for about five minutes. The easiest thing to do now is put on loose pajamas and go to bed. Try your hardest not to wear tight clothing where you applied the tanner.
-
Step 7
Apply the tanning lotion several days in a row until you are happy with the color. Then you can skip one or two days in between applications.
