Napa Valley may be the most famous home to California wineries, but it is also quite expensive to visit. Lesser- known Paso Robles is also home to many wineries in the central California region. There you can enjoy the area wines at a much cheaper cost than in Napa Valley. A small town located within San Luis Obispo County, Paso Robles boasts over 180 area wineries. To enjoy the area wines at a low cost, look for inexpensive winery tours and special events that offer discount tastings of local wines in tasting rooms and restaurants in the downtown area.       Join a wine tour. Wine tours offer significant value packages where you can enjoy wine from several different wineries at a deep discount or free. The Wine Line tour, for example, is a hop-on, hop-off winery experience that includes free wine tasting at several of the area wineries. For other wineries the cost is $5 or less for a tasting of wine. Two- and three-day Wine Line tour packages to the many wineries in Paso Robles start at $60, at time of publication.

      Sign up for free tastings at vineyards. Some vineyards in Paso Robles will host free tasting specials periodically for a special event. Some offer complimentary tasting of at least one wine on a regular basis. These include Eagle Castle Winery, Mitchella Winery, and Opolo Vineyards, at time of publication. Always check the website of the winery you want to visit or call ahead to determine if they charge for tastings or to see if they are having a special.

      Attend a downtown wine tasting event. Downtown Paso Robles is filled with restaurants, tasting rooms and wine bars that feature local wines.
