How to Find Out If You May Be Eligible for Food Stamps Online

The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program website contains all of the information required to reach an understanding of the program's benefits, eligibility requirements and how you may apply. The federal government replaced the longstanding "Food Stamp Program" with the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, known widely by the acronym for its name — SNAP — in 2008.

Visit the USDA's SNAP website.

Click on "Eligibility Requirements" in the middle of the page.

Examine the information on the resulting "Eligibility" page.

Do not rely solely on your reading of the information on the SNAP Eligibility webpage. Contact the nearest office of the state agency through which the SNAP program is administered and seek an official eligibility screening.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be embarrased if you need to apply for food stamps. Anyone who "looks down" on you for trying to help yourself can either pay your bills or mind their own business.
