Things You'll Need:

  • computer or ebook reader
  • online access to get to the websites
  1. Step 1

Today’s economy has made it even more frugal in families. For those who love to read, or just like to get books for other reasons, there are ways to get many different free ebooks. These are available to be downloaded in a variety of ways and can be read either on the computer using a PDF reader such as Adobe or via ebook readers that are portable such as the Kindle or the Sony Reader. Many of these free online ebooks can be used in a variety of ways, as their copyright has long since expired. You can use these to read, use them in a homeschool setting, or see what you can come up with. Whatever you choose these books can go from mild classics to modern bodice-rippers of today.

  2. Step 2

Going straight to Amazon can net you free online ebooks for the Kindle (after all they make the Kindle). Just go to the website, put in a search for kindle books, click on the category for the Romance section, and then sort out the list of results from “Low to High” in price. As of this writing there were 18 free romance books on the list. These are all newer books too, modern and up to date. Classics can be found elsewhere.

  3. Step 3

Project Gutenberg is run by a wide network of volunteers and can bring you digitized books as well as speeches. Michael Hart, the founder of Project Gutenberg, created ebooks in 1971. The site boasts over 27,000 books and over 100,000 that can be accessed through various site partners. You can browse the Top 100 ebooks, the most recent ones to hit the site, or through its special areas such as digitized sheet music and audio books. This is a fabulous site for the classics and the historical files that some college students will need.

  4. Step 4

ManyBooks.net lives up to its name by having many books in several categories. Besides the Kindle format, you can get these ebooks in other formats such as Palm, Sony Reader, and the Mobipocket. Maintained by Matthew McClintock, the site is run solely on donations from readers and users. The site has recently put a few ads in to help supplement the lack of donations lately. It is user friendly, clear and clean of flashy popups and frills, and is easy to navigate. Things that can be browsed here are the most popular list, the categories of books on offer, and by the author.
