Fluorescent paint is expensive and may come in limited colors or textures. You can side step this problem by creating your own fluorescent paint. You can modify the color of the glow by choosing different colored glow powders--solid pigments--or optical brighteners. Glow powder also comes in different size particles, which lets you adjust the coverage and texture. Make sure to use a non-metal container and spatula for your mixing and storage, and a clear paint for the base.

Things You'll Need:

  • Clear paint Optical brightener or glow powder Non-metal container Non-metal spatula
  1. Step 1

Pour the clear paint into a non-metal container.

  2. Step 2

Add about 1/5 as much glow powder as there is in the container.

  3. Step 3

Mix thoroughly with a non-metal spatula. Make sure that the glow powder is mixed thoroughly and evenly through the clear medium. Add more powder, if necessary, to achieve the desired intensity and coverage of glow.

  4. Step 4

Cover tightly and set aside. Mix the glow paint thoroughly just before applying.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check whether your base paint is oil, solvent or water-based before purchasing glow powder or optical brightener. Some glow powders and optical brighteners may only be suitable for use with a certain base or bases. Applying fluorescent paint on a white surface makes for a better, brighter glow. If the surface you intend to paint on isn't white, consider priming it with a coat of white paint before applying the glow paint.
  • Always work in a well-ventilated area when handling paint and other solvents.
