How to Restore Sound to Windows XP

If sound devices such as speakers and the sound card are working on your PC but Windows XP is not playing any sound events or schemes, you will need to tweak the registry keys. Any registry modifications require backing up the registry first, and then modifying registry values with the Windows Registry Editor.

Instructions

    • 1

Back up your registry. Click "Start" > "Run" and type:
      %SystemRoot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Click "OK" at the bottom of the screen to continue.

    • 2

Set your restore point. On the "Welcome to System Restore" page, click "Create" to create a restore point as part of the backup process. Select "Next" to continue.

    • 3

Name the restore point you are creating. On the "Create a Restore Point" page, type in a name in the name field so you can return to this point with ease. Click "Create" to confirm, then select "Close" to return to the main screen.

    • 4

Run the Registry Editor. Click "Start" > "Run" and then type Regedt.exe in the "Run" field. Click "OK" to run the Registry Editor program.

    • 5

Select HKEY_CURRENT_USER from the screen to modify the values. Look for <No Name> :REG_SZ: in the right pane.

    • 6

Delete the registry value if there is a value in this line. Click on the value and press the "Delete" button on your keyboard to remove it.

    • 7

Select "Quit Registry Editor" on the window pane to exit Windows Registry Editor and resume your Windows session.

    • 8

Select "Start" and "Restart" to restart your computer and make the changes to your Windows sound settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Any errors made when modifying the registry can be corrected by returning to the system restore point you created. Always create a restore point when modifying Windows registry for any reason.
