How to Surf Fish for Pompano
Pompano is touted as one of the best of the best of the table fare fish. It is a fine white-meat fish that derives the majority of its diet from shellfish, such as shrimp, and sand fleas. Catching pompano isn't difficult and can be a great way to spend a day in the surf.
Things You'll Need
- Light/medium spinning rod and reel 10 lbs. or less test fishing line Beach spike 15 lbs. test swivels Double hook leader Small circle hooks Pyramid sinker weights Bait (peeled shrimp is ideal) Fishing license

Locate a suitable spot along the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Coast to fish and place your beach spike firmly in the sand.

Tie the swivel to the end of your fishing line.

Tie the leader to the swivel on one end and on the other tie the pyramid weight.

Tie hooks to the tag ends of the leader.

Bait the hooks with peeled shrimp and cast your line past any sandbar present between the breakers (waves close to shore) and surf (waves further out).

Place rod in beach spike and wait for the rod tip to start bouncing toward the surf, indicating a pompano is on the line.

Reel in the fish.

Tips & Warnings
The size weight used will be determined by the amount of surf present. More surf means using a heavier weight to keep the bait in place. Adding small orange beads to the tag ends before tying the hooks can be beneficial. The orange beads replicate the look of sand flea eggs.
