How to Fix Microsoft Internet Explorer Not Responding

Microsoft Internet Explorer is the default Web browser included in all copies of the Microsoft Windows operating system. Internet Explorer is one of the most widely used Internet browsers and is capable of displaying all standards-compliant websites and Web applications. Sometimes, the Internet Explorer software locks up, or freezes, and does not respond to the user's commands. Often, closing the program and reopening it will fix the problem.

Instructions

    • 1

Click the Windows "Start" menu, select "All Programs" and choose "Windows Updates." Click "Check for Updates" in the left navigation pane. Often, updating Microsoft programs and the operating system will fix issues.

    • 2

Click the "Start" menu, type "msconfig" in the Search field and choose the "Startup" tab. A dialog box will appear that lists all software programs that are enable to run when you turn on your computer. Disable all of the programs except for essential services such as your anti-virus software and firewall. Restart your PC.

    • 3

Press "Ctrl-Alt-Delete" and click "Start Task Manager." Select "iexplorer.exe" in the list of running programs and click "End Task." Do not click "explorer.exe;" this is an essential system program. Continue to Step 3 if that does not close the Internet Explorer browser.

    • 4

Click the Windows "Start" menu and select "Computer." Right-click on "OS (C:)" and choose "Defragment." Occasionally, your hard drive might misplace program data, which results in software freezing or not responding. Repeat the defragment process with the "D: Drive" and any other hard drive partitions.

    • 5

Click the Windows "Start" menu and select "Restart" to reboot your computer.

    • 6

Return to browsing the Web with Internet Explorer and make sure the browser is functioning properly.

    • 7

If Internet Explorer is still not working properly, go to the Microsoft Fix It Center (see Resources) and download the Fix It program. This program will search for problems with the computer and fix it automatically.

Tips & Warnings

  • Constant problems with software not responding may point to a bigger problem, such as a computer virus.
