How to Check the Transmission Fluid in a Lincoln

Transmission fluid is necessary to cool a vehicle's transmission and to ensure that it shifts properly. You should check the transmission fluid with every engine-oil change, being careful that the transmission is not filled with too much fluid. An excessive amount of fluid is just as destructive as a fluid level that is too low.

1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.

2. Operate the engine at a fast idle for about 2 minutes to allow the engine and transmission to reach normal operating temperature.

3. Exit the vehicle while allowing the engine to idle, then lift the hood.

4. Locate the transmission's dipstick. On a Lincoln, it is located on the passenger's side of the engine compartment. The dipstick sits between the engine and the transmission.

5. Withdraw the dipstick and wipe it with a clean rag.

6. Insert the dipstick into the dipstick tube, then withdraw it again.

7. Look at the tip of the dipstick to check the fluid level. Note that there are two marks on the tip of the dipstick. One mark reads "F" (for full), and the other mark reads "Add." The distance between these two points on a Lincoln transmission is equal to 1 pint of transmission fluid. The transmission-fluid level should be between these two marks.

8. If necessary, add transmission fluid to the transmission while the engine is idling. Pour the fluid down the transmission's dipstick tube.
