How to Install Windows XP Themes

Windows XP themes change the appearance of your desktop as well as your folders. They add images and sounds, and even allow you to customize your mouse cursor. This tool may also install new icons to replace your previous ones on the desktop. You may be able to download an ".exe" file, which you can simply click on to install Windows XP themes. However, some themes you must manually install. There are several categories of themes to choose from, including sports figures, celebrities and nature.

      Unpack your downloadable Windows XP themes to a separate folder. Use WinZip or WinAce to extract the theme file. Several types of items will appear in this folder.

      Click on "Start" on your bottom toolbar in Windows XP. Scroll to the "Control Panel" icon and press this option. Select the "Display" preference.

      Press the first tab, "Themes," in the "Display Properties" window. Click on the arrow key, scroll down to the "Browse" option.

      Open the extraction folder. A window entitled "Open Theme" will pop up. Click on the "Theme" file inside the folder. You will recognize the item by the only one you can select. This is automatic in the "Files of Type" bar. Click the "Open" button.

      View the "Display Properties" window again. Under the "Theme" tab, the name of your new theme is present. Click the "OK" button. Your desktop will display your new theme.

  • Before opening any downloadable files, such as a ".zip," ".ace" or ".exe," run a virus scan on the item.
