Things You'll Need

  • Construction, foam or cardboard paper
  • Scissors
  • Rubber bands
  • Red permanent marker
  • Glue
  • Tacks
  • Paper
  • Pencil
  • Gather the necessary materials you will need to create your rubber band heart. The items you will need include rubber bands, a red permanent marker, scissors, construction, foam or cardboard paper, glue, tacks and a pencil. If you do not have these materials on hand, you can pick them up at a local store such as Target or Wal-Mart.

  • Start by cutting the rubber bands with scissors so that they are long pieces rather than loops. Take your red permanent marker and carefully color the rubber pieces. Set the pieces aside and allow the marker to dry on the band pieces.

  • Draw a heart on a piece of construction, foam or cardboard paper. The size heart you draw will be the size of your rubber band heart.

  • Place the rubber pieces, red side up, along the heart that your drew. Secure the rubber pieces to the outline of the heart with glue or tacks. You may also choose to tie the pieces together by knotting the ends together with small knots. Continue to place the rubber pieces until the entire outline of the heart is covered. If you glued the pieces, you will need to allow time for them to dry and you may have to press down on the pieces so that they hold their form while drying.

  • Begin to fill the inside area of the heart when the outline is secure. Place the rubber bands in horizontal rows in the inside of the heart, with the red side of the bands facing up. You will have to alter the size of some of the rubber bands to fit into the heart shape by trimming them with scissors. Once you have filled the entire inside of the heart, begin to glue the rubber pieces, piece by piece.

  • Allow the rubber band pieces to dry before handling your rubber band heart and enjoying your creation. This craft will serve as a great gift for Valentine's Day, Mother's Day or for someone's birthday. It can also be completed relatively easily by a classroom of children.
