  1. Step 1

Vaccinate the canine, especially for rabies. Dogs that live outside are particularly prone to rabies infection.

  2. Step 2

Make sure that your new puppy is up-to-date on all of its shots and vaccinations. Distemper is a common affliction of Askal puppies.

  3. Step 3

Feed the dog a regular diet of puppy food and give it plenty of water. Twice-a-day feedings are usually appropriate. Ask your veterinarian if a particular type of food is recommended for your particular Askal.

  4. Step 4

Provide the dog with adequate shelter as well as room to run if you plan to keep the Askal puppy outside. Outdoor pups will need a bit more grooming. Bathe them regularly and provide them with flea and tick treatments. Well-fed and groomed dogs will live longer and not be wary of human contact.

  5. Step 5

Use a reward-based program that does not use corporal punishment to teach/train the dog if you plan to train the dog for protection purposes. By treating Askal puppies well, you are ensuring that they maintain a good temperament into their adulthood.

Tips & Warnings
  • Askal puppies are often thought to be dogs for only the poor in Philippines. This is a common misconception and an askal can be an ideal pet for anyone. Mixed-breed puppies are said to have higher intelligence and better temperaments than purebred pups.
  • If you have young children around, you will want to pay particular attention to the overall treatment of your dog. A mistreated askal puppy is at risk for being vicious around kids. You need to take care of your puppy, regardless of the breed. Many askal owners feed the animals with scraps and do not bathe them regularly. Even if you plan to use the dogs for protective purposes, you should still care for them.
