Running is a great way to exercise. Not only do you strengthen and tone your legs and midsection, but you also burn tons of calories in the process. On top of all of that running increases your cardiovascular endurance and has numerous health benefits. Unfortunately many people do not like running or rather don't know how to run. They usually try running a little too fast a little too soon and end up with sore muscles and don't want to do it any more or try running with someone who is more experienced in running and get left behind. This is how we can cut down on some of these things.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1
    Look for running shoes that prevent your feet from rolling in or out.

    The first you need running shoes, not just any sneakers will do. Yes running shoes can be a little expensive and you can get cheaper sneakers that look similar, but running is not about how you look it is about how long can you perform and while the cheaper shoe will cost less in the beginning, running shoes will save you money later on by preventing injuries.

  2. Step 2

    There are three (3) paces associated with running, they are easy, moderate and all out. The easy is exactly what it sounds like, easy, at this pace you are relaxed and you feel like you could have a conversation with someone. The moderate pace is a little more intense, you feel like you could maintain the pace for a while but your breathing is a little labored. The all out pace is as fast as you can go for as long as you can go, usually you can't say much at this pace. The goal is be able to figure out where your moderate pace is

  3. Step 3
    Try to pick some where that would take you a little less than 30 mins to walk to.

    Once you have decided on a goal (how far you are going to run), start running at an easy pace for about 3 - 4 minutes.

  4. Step 4
    Remember you want to be able to maintain this pace for a while.

    Once you have warmed up pick up the pace a little, just enough to make you breath a little bit harder. You will feel as if you can go faster but remember you don't want to go too fast too soon.

  5. Step 5

    That's basically it. Now you need to set goals for yourself like running further or faster.

Tips & Warnings
  • At first it will be difficult to maintain a steady pace, but keep at it.
  • It is alright to slow down, but do not stop to walk until you reach your goal.
  • Do not try to keep with anyone else or out run anyone else, especially if you have not been running constantly for over 3 months.
  • Remember to stretch before you start running

on 3/19/2009 Great article. Tip for heavy set folks like myself, jog if you're hips are wider than your shoulders. When I mine were I got a bad case of runners knee that kept me from running for six months. Don't run down hills if you're wide hipped also, especially if you're knock knee. LOL Don't laugh. Being large comes with it's own issues. I run races and am in the Power Runner category. We have to be extra careful but we can run, so stop looking behind you cause yeah that's my panting your hear coming up from behind. Smile!
