Tune a Guitar Like Jimmy Page

Jimmy Page has one of the most distinctive guitar sounds of all time, thanks to his use of alternate tunings. One of Page's favorite tunings, used on the songs "Kasmir" and "Black Mountain Side," is the DADGAD tuning.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Tune the sixth string down from an E to a D. This will give you Page's classic low-end tone.

  2. Step 2

Tune the fifth string to the note A, the same as a standard guitar tuning.

  3. Step 3

Tune the fourth string to the note D, again same as standard.

  4. Step 4

Tune the third string to the note G, also as in standard guitar tuning.

  5. Step 5

Tune the second string a whole tone down to the note A.

  6. Step 6

Tune the first string a whole tone down to D. The two outer strings should be the same pitch, two octaves apart.

  7. Step 7

Strum all six strings to hear how the new tuning sounds compared to standard guitar tuning.

Tips & Warnings
  • If a string is sharp, tune down below the desired pitch first, then tune the note up into that pitch. This will help the string stay in tune longer.
  • Always pluck each string when tuning to ensure that it is being tuned in the right direction.
