Connect the USB cable to the back of the DeskJet, and the other end into the computer. Avoid plugging the printer into a USB hub, if possible.

Install the drivers for the DeskJet. Inserting the CD into a Windows machine will launch the autorun feature, which helps non-techie users easily install it, as this is a no-nonsense wizard. If it doesn't launch, access the CD under My Computer, and double click it. Mac users will see the CD icon on the desktop. Open the disk, double click on the installer, and the process will begin.

Reboot the computer once the drivers have finished installing. Windows users should verify that the printer is installed by opening the Control Panel, Printer and Faxes, and confirming that the printer listed. Mac users should open System Preferences, select the Print & Fax icon, and the printer will be listed there.
