How to Tune a 7-String Guitar

Save

While learning to play the 7-string guitar may be a challenge for any guitarist, tuning the instrument can be very straight forward. With a guitar tuner in hand--and the names of each of the seven strings--tuning a 7-string guitar can be done quickly and easily.

Things You'll Need

  • 7-String Guitar Guitar Tuner
  • Pluck the lowest string of the guitar; this is considered the seventh string. Adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter B on the tuner. If the string is flat, turn the peg counter clockwise. If it is sharp, turn it clockwise.

  • Pluck the sixth string; adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter E on the tuner.

  • Pluck the fifth string. Adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter A on the tuner.

  • Continue along this path. Pluck the fourth string; adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter D on the tuner.

  • Pluck the third string. Adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter G on the tuner.

  • Continue on. There's more to do. Pluck the second string of the guitar; adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter B on the tuner.

  • Pluck first string. Adjust the corresponding tuning peg until it registers the letter B on the tuner.

Tips & Warnings

  • Pluck each string when tuning to ensure it is being tuned in the right direction. This will prevent strings from breaking when tuning.
