Taking a walk together doesn't cost a thing.

Your family budget might be tight for one or several various reasons like a rough economy and steep gas prices. Your family might be struggling to find fun, yet cost-efficient, activities. If you had to cancel your annual family vacation because of budget constraints, you can still plan an exciting family weekend that features fun activities without breaking the bank. Use your creativity to make the most out of your area.

Go on a family camping trip. While you won't be able to rent a luxurious cabin, you can usually enter state-run campsites for less than $20 a night. Bring your tent and cost-efficient food for the weekend, including hot dogs, sandwiches and chips. Some free camping activities include hiking, telling stories around a campfire, stargazing at the constellations and having a picnic. If you can't afford the gas or park entrance fees, camp out in the backyard instead.

Use natural settings in your area. No matter where you live, there is most likely a scenic place nearby that doesn't cost a thing. For example, if you live near the coast, you can take your family to the beach for the day. If you live in the mountains, you can go hiking together. Families who live in the city can usually find a city park to spend the day feeding the ducks and just relaxing with some downtime. Plan a picnic, take a bike ride, go bird watching or plan some other type of outdoor activity. If there is no place to go in your area, get out the blow-up pool and sprinkler to indulge in a cool-off day.

Pretend you're a visiting family from out of town. Go to the tourist bureau to gather information and brochures about free activities. Most visitor centers also have coupons for discounts on attractions. You can probably find a museum or two that offers free admission, as well. Research upcoming free city festivals and attend the ones that feature artists or live music.

Plan a sports-filled weekend. During the summer, your family can take in a baseball game for cheap if you buy the upper deck tickets. You won't break your budget by splurging on cheap hot dogs and peanuts at the game. Or go to the local park and play a game yourselves.
