Depending on financial situation you may be looking for way to save cash. Well here is one on for size...cutting your own hair. 'What cutting my own hair' you say...yes cutting your own hair. This applies mostly to men, seeing as its less complicated, but women feel free to try it if you can pull it off. Now think about it, how much money do you actually spend on hair cuts. Some people go to the barber two times a month or maybe four times. Depending on the amount times you go to the barber and the price you can save up to $500 on hair cuts alone. This may not be an idea for the high maintenance types. But it 'is' a way to save money, just do it yourself. Beware: You get what you pay for.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Hair clippers/trimmers
  • A hand mirror
  • Persistence
  1. Step 1

First thing you have to do is study your hair. Judging on the type of hair cuts you get, you may not be able to give yourself a satisfying hair cut. But for the most part if you decide to go with something a little less appealing you can definitely pull it off. The key is to be able to see every angle of your head, so that every thing can be the same. By using two mirrors [maybe a hand mirror and regular mirror] you can do this.

  2. Step 2

Once you're able to see your whole head with mirrors, think of the type of hair style you want. I would recommend something low maintenance with not too much variations and sort of plain. This doesn't mean that the haircut won't look good on you, depending on how well you do it. Take your hair clipper and study its cutting lengths. They usually range from 1/16" to 1", depending how short or long you want your hair. You may need to test the lengths. This is easy...START WITH THE LONGEST LENGTH and work your way down to the desired level you want your hair.

Once you have tested the desired length on a safe test area, you can now start.

  3. Step 3

When cutting your hair please keep in mind that depending on which direction you are cutting in [with the grain or against the grain], the lengths vary. So this means that even if you choose a set cutting length, depending on the direction you cutting in it can be a different length. For this study which the direction your hair grows in on every part of your head. The top of your head may most likely grow forward. The sides may grow in a down direction, and so on. Oh and keep in mind the top-back area of your head. Its not actually the top and not actually the back of your head, but where they meet. That area of your head may grow in a different direction also.

  4. Step 4

Once you have identified the direction of which your hair grows in on the different areas of your head, take your clippers with the desired cutting lengths and once again test it on safe area to be sure of the cutting length you want. AGAIN, START WITH THE LONGEST CUTTING LENGTH, to be sure that you don't cut your hair shorter that you wanted.

Once you've found the right length. Proceed with cutting your hair. Keeping in mind [cutting with the grain or against the grain]. Please take you time. Feel as comfortable as possible when cutting your hair, to ensure that you get the type of hair cut you want. Don't forget to use the hand mirror and stationary mirror to view the spots you can't see.

  5. Step 5

When you are satisfied with the cut, using the mirrors to view the blind spots, you can proceed to give yourself a trim. CAUTION: Trims can be very difficult if you're not careful. You have to make sure you have a steady hand and are CUTTING IN A STRAIGHT LINE, not slanted. To be sure off this try to keep your head leveled as possible while facing the mirror. Use the same precaution as cutting your hair. Make sure your are constantly double checking to make you are cutting in a straight line. And don't cut anything until you are comfortable doing so. The sides can be difficult, you'll most likely get the hang of it after a while of doing this.

The back of your head you can also use the mirrors to see the back-side of your head. Cutting the back-side of your head will feel funny doing. Because when looking at it from the mirror, every movement is actually the opposite. It is not as you think, so you have to practice the motions before cutting so that you are comfortable. But you'll get the hang of it.

  6. Step 6

And there you have it, your own hair cut. At first you may actually do a bad job, but after a little while you will get better. You do have a choice, you can save money and do it yourself or go to the barber. You don't have to cut your own hair for ever, its just a way to save some money when you need it.
