While DVRs are lifesavers, freeing you from a television schedule that's increasingly filled with serial dramas that you can't even miss a second of, you're also tied down to them. Another drawback is that you can't pass the show on to a friend when you're done with it. Attaching a DVD recorder to a DVR will solve both of these problems.

Things You'll Need

  • DVR
  • DVD recorder
  • Two sets of RCA cables (yellow, red, white)

Instructions

    • 1

Connect your DVD recorder to your DVR. DVRs generally have two sets of hookups. Use one of your sets of RCA cables, connecting the yellow plug to the yellow port, the red to the red and the white to the white on both your DVR and DVD recorder. You will be using the Video/Audio out from your DVR and the Video/Audio in on your DVD recorder.

    • 2

Connect your DVD recorder to your television using the second set of RCA cables in the same method described in Step 1. You will be using the Video/Audio out from your DVD recorder and the Video/Audio in on your TV.

    • 3

Plug your DVD recorder into a power outlet, and set it to the mode that allows it to receive signals from the DVR, typically Video 1 or 2. Refer to your manual for more specific instructions, as DVD recorders vary by brand.

    • 4

Put your television into the mode that allows you to see the signal from the DVD recorder, typically one of the video modes. Again, for more detailed instructions, refer to your TV's manual.

    • 5

Once you can see your DVR signal through the DVD recorder on the television, insert a blank DVD into your DVD recorder. Go into your DVR's memory and start the show you want to record. Then press record on your DVD recorder.

    • 6

When you are done recording, press Stop. You will then need to finalize the disc to make it viewable on any DVD player. This operation varies widely depending on the DVD recorder, so, again, you will have to refer to the manual.
