How to Hit a Drop Shot in Tennis

Contributor
By eHow Contributing Writer

The drop shot is a surprise shot that can be very effective, especially when hit well and on soft courts.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Grip the racket using the Continental grip (see the Related eHows).

  2. Step 2

Turn your shoulders slightly while preparing the racket, with a half to three-quarters backswing, depending on where you are on the court. The closer you are to the net, the less backswing you'll need.

  3. Step 3

Imagine "peeling" under the ball as you hit it, as if you're slicing the underside of an orange.

  4. Step 4

Extend your arms at all times.

  5. Step 5

Finish with the racket up high.

  6. Step 6

Try to keep from bending your elbow during contact with the ball and while finishing the shot.

  7. Step 7

Hit this shot with a closed stance (crossing over with one foot) or an open stance (feet facing the net).

  8. Step 8

Practice a drop shot using a wall. Stand about 6 to 12 feet from the wall. Think of bumping the ball, allowing it to bounce in front of you before hitting it. This exercise will develop your touch.

  9. Step 9

Practice a drop shot from the service line, slicing under the ball with the goal of having it bounce twice in the opposite service box.

Tips & Warnings
  • Consider a drop shot foremost when you are inside the baseline.
  • Note that a drop shot is more effective in singles tennis than in doubles.
  • Tennis is a physically demanding sport that can result in serious injury. We recommend that you seek the proper eqiupment and training before undertaking this activity.

on 12/28/2007 Perfecting a drop shot is all about perfecting your touch. Don't get frustrated if you don't get it at first. Keep trying and make adjustments if you do anything wrong. Eventually, you will get it. If you have trouble try practicing with a foam ball. This will help your touch develop and all your strokes will benefit especially the drop shot.
